Overview Itinerary
Day 01 | PUERTO MALDONADO – INKATERRA FIELD STATION – RIVER NIGHT WATCH
Firstly, you’ll arrive at the Inkaterra Guides Field Station after leaving Puerto Maldonado. In fact, at the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, scientists have documented 540 bird species, 362 ant species (a world record) and over 100 mammal species among these exclusive rainforest trails.
Once the sun sets, your next activity consists of speculating nocturnal wildlife via a cruise down the Madre de Dios River. Animals like capybara or white caimans are difficult to spot along the riverbanks, therefore you’ll need dire. Accordingly, spotlights will assist in your search because these notoriously elusive critters are masters of hide-and-seek.
Day 02 | INKATERRA FIELD STATION – CANOPY WALKWAY – CARACHAMA TRAIL*
The Inkaterra Canopy Walkway stands renowned for many reasons: for one, it is the winner of the PURE Award, trumping the ‘High Emotion/Low Impact’ category. More importantly, the walkway is designed for scientific research on ecosystems inhabiting the rainforest canopy. To be specific, the walkway is a 1129 ft. system of 2 observation towers, 8 platforms and 7 hanging bridges 100 ft. above the ground. In particular, the site is a perfect attraction for birdwatching and other eco-friendly activities.
Next, you will take a 20-minute walk to the natural pool Carachamayo. When here, you will learn about the ecosystem where these waterholes are found, and about the carachama, (Pseudoinelepis genibardis) a freshwater fish caught and eaten for their nutritional value.
Day 03 | INKATERRA FIELD STATION – RIVER ISLAND – PALMETUM – NOCTURNAL RAINFOREST
To start your journey, you’ll take a 20-minute boat ride to a river island near the Inkaterra Guides Field Station. The island appears as a large sandbank on the shores of the Madre de Dios River. Next, hop off the boat and explore the island!―you’ll immediately notice the floodplain, which supports an ecosystem of flourishing birds such as the Amazonian umbrellabird, a prominent sight for birdwatchers.
Afterwards, you’ll explore a protected plot area spanning 30 hectares, where the Inkaterra Asociación has documented up to 19 native palm species. For that reason, take out a pen and pad, because you’ll learn about natural seed dispersion, among other jungle survival mechanisms. On top of that, the characteristics and cultural meaning of trees within the Palmetum, like the yarina and walking palm, are vital to understanding rainforest culture.
Lastly, attune your senses for a nocturnal walk in the Amazon. As your hearing sharpens and sight dulls, specific rainforest sounds become easier to distinguish, despite the fact that every inch of jungle is enveloped by a chorus of mystery.
