Machu Picchu 4 day Hike – Overview Itinerary

DAY 1-CUSCO |KM 82 | WAYLLABAMBA

After a nutritious breakfast, you will leave your hotel in Cusco. In tandem with your tour guide, you will travel on a private van toward the start the Machu Picchu 4 day hike. This starting point is the village of Piscacucho, which is 82km away. Here you begin your expedition at 2400 m.a.s.l. and you will ascend smoothly toward the ancient archaeological ruins of Llactapata (2650 m.a.s.l.). And after another 2 hours of enthralling trekking, you end up at the famed archaeological site of Wayllabamba. Finally, setting up camp and enjoying a delicious, well-earned dinner will be served and you will spend the night here.

Hiking time: 5 – 6 hours

Kilometers covered: 12 km. (7.5 mi.)

Low point: 2'600 m./8'228 ft. - High point: 3'000 m./9'842 ft.

DAY 2-WAYLLABAMBA| WARMIWAÑUSKA| PACAYMAYU

You’ll start your day with another delicious breakfast. You will head off early towards the highest point on the Inca trail, the Warmiwañuska Pass. After approximately 3 hours of trekking the Warmiwañuska Pass, also known as “The Dead Woman Pass” (4215 m.a.s.l.), will be finally within reach. After lunch, you will ascend once more up until the Pacaymayu Gorge, where you will set up the campsite, eat dinner, and rest for the night.

Hiking time: 7 – 8 hours

Kilometers covered: 16 km. (9.9 mi.)

Low point: 3'000 m./9'842 ft. - High point: 4'215 m./13'828 ft.

DAY 3-PACAYMAYU| WIÑAYWAYNA

The third day of the Machu Picchu 4 day hike is long but beautiful. Here you will find the stunning archaeological remains of Runkuracay (3800 m.a.s.l). From Conchamarca you will see the village of Phuyupatamarca, otherwise known as the ‘town above the clouds’ (3665 m.a.s.l.). Afterwards, you will take the stone steps (around 2000 steps), until you reach Wiñaywayna Citadel “Forever Young” (2700 m.a.s.l.) to finish the day. Finally, you arrive to your campsite to eat, relax and get some sleep ahead of the final day.

Hiking time: 8 – 10 hours

Kilometers covered: 16 km. (9.9 mi.)

Low point: 2'650 m./8'694 ft. - High point: 3'900 m./12'467 ft.

DAY 4-WIÑAYWAYNA | MACHU PICCHU | CUSCO

You will begin the day very early and enjoy yet another delightful breakfast. Afterwards, you will walk for approximately 3 hours, trekking around 6 km until the next point. Thereafter, you will arrive at the ‘Sun Gate’ Inti Punku (2490 m.a.s.l). The Machu Picchu Citadel (2430 m.a.s.l) is finally visible. Upon arrival in the Machu Picchu Citadel, you will undertake a  guided tour for approximately 2 hours. After you will have lunch in Aguas Calientes and then, you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a private van will be waiting fro you at the train station and will drive you to your hotel in Cusco.

Hiking time: 3 – 4 hours

Kilometers covered: 6 km. (3.7 mi.)

Day One: Cusco | Km82 | Wayllabamba

The famed day trip Machu Picchu 4 day Hike is the world wide renowned, pinnacle of the Incan culture. After a nutritious breakfast , you will leave your accommodation in Cusco. In tandem with your tour guide, you will travel on a comfortable tourist van toward the starting point of the trek. This starting point is the village of Piscacucho, which is 82km away. Upon arrival you will go through the control point of the Inca trail and then you start your trek. You begin your expedition at 2400 m.a.s.l. and you will ascend smoothly toward the ancient archaeological ruins of Llactapata (2650 m.a.s.l.). This will take around 2 hours of trekking time. Following your initial trek, you arrive at the archaic ruins to explore. Afterwards, at the base, you will enjoy a tasty, fresh meal prepared by your travelling chef.  Thereafter, you continue along your route to the semitropical valley of Wayllabamba. And after another 2 hours of enthralling trekking, you end up at the famed archaeological site of Wayllabamba. Like Indiana Jones, you will thoroughly explore these ruins and set up your campsite for the night here. Day Two: Wayllabamba | Warmiwañuska | Pacaymayu

You’ll start your day with another delicious breakfast. The second day is considered the most trying and ardous trek of the trip. But it’s definitely worth the challenge! You will head off early towards the highest point on the Inca trail, the Warmiwañuska Pass. Along the way, you’ll experience different microclimates. After approximately 3 hours of trekking the Warmiwañuska Pass, also known as “The Dead Woman Pass” (4215 m.a.s.l.), will be finally within reach.  Once there, you will enjoy the spectacular views of the Vilcanota and Vilcabamba Mountain Chain.  And if you’re lucky, you might even see some condors flying high.   Thereafter, you will descend through the famed winding valley until you find a decent spot to have lunch. After, you will ascend once more up until the Pacaymayu Gorge, where you will set up the campsite, eat dinner, and rest for the night.

Day Three: Pacaymayu | Wiñaywayna

The third day is one of the longest, but perhaps the most beautiful. The wonderful Incan ruins all along the routes are a sight to behold. You ascend a steep trail and reach the incredible second Pass. Here you will find the stunning archaeological remains of Runkuracay (3800 m.a.s.l). Afterwards, you descend to Sayaqmarca (3600 m.a.s.l) which known as “The Dominant Town”. It’s filled with unique Incan ruins. Then you will work your way through the valley, stopping for lunch along the way.   You will continue along your route to Conchamarca. This is another, recently uncovered, archaic ruin to marvel upon. Thereafter, you encounter your first tunnel and after you will arrive at the final pass of the Inca Trail. From here you will see the village of Phuyupatamarca, otherwise known as the ‘town above the clouds’ (3665 m.a.s.l.). It is a spectacular stop along the way. Afterwards, you will take the impressive stone steps (around 2000 steps), until you reach Wiñaywayna Citadel “Forever Young” (2700 m.a.s.l.) to finish the day. Finally, you arrive to your campsite to eat, relax and get some sleep ahead of the final day.

Day Four: Wiñaywayna | Machu Picchu | Cusco

You will begin the day very early and enjoy yet another delightful breakfast. Afterwards, you will walk for approximately 3 hours, trekking around 6 km until the next point. Rare and beautiful flora and fauna will be in plain sight all along the route. Thereafter, you will arrive at the ‘Sun Gate’ Inti Punku (2490 m.a.s.l). The Machu Picchu Citadel (2430 m.a.s.l) is finally visible and here it’s the perfect chance to take a photo. But to see Machu Picchu in the flesh is the only way to truly capture its awe inspiring existence. ‘The lost Inca City’ is considered one of the most important urban centres and an incredible achievement of engineering of the Incan Empire. Upon arrival in the Machu Picchu Citadel, you will undertake a fascinating, guided tour for approximately 2 hours. You will also some free time to explore on your own. Thereupon, you will take a bus down to the beautiful town of Aguas Calientes (2040 m.a.s.l).  You will have a lovely lunch here. Then, afterwards, you will be taking the train on the Peru Rail – Expedition* back to Cusco. Once you arrive at the train station, you will be transferred to your accommodation via our tourist van. And this is the end of your adventure and so now it’s time to relax and contemplate your journey.
