Maras Moray Half Day Tour Highlights:
Maras Moray Half Day Tour Itinerary:
Rise and shine for the Maras Moray half day Tour from Cusco: you’re scheduled for pickup at your Cusco accommodation around 8:00 am. Your first stop will be in the town of Chinchero, where the remains of the colonial temple, Tupac Inca Yupanqui, was built upon Inca construction. Likewise, there are more Inca walls to admire in the main square of the village. Next, you will visit the town of Maras, located at an altitude of 3,380 m. Maras is a special site due to the salt mines surrounding the area. An underground spring stores the salt, from which 3000 small wells then extract the salt from among these mines. Consequently, the “Salinas de Maras” has been a natural resource exploited for means of economic exchange since Inca time.
You’ll then proceed to the Archaeological Group of Moray, which are terraces that were used by the Incas for agriculture experimentation. Here they conducted studies adapting different plant species to new ecosystems. Finally, a box lunch will be served.
Thereafter, the bus will take you to the town of Ollantaytambo: here, not only are you able to scale the craft market, but you can also ascend to the archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo, where you can fully appreciate the surrounding agricultural terraces, cemeteries and other Inca constructions. Accordingly, the Maras Moray half day Tour comes to a close: your bus will transport you back to Cusco around 5:00 pm.

MARAS – MORAY HALF DAY TOUR:
CHINCHERO
The town of Chinchero, nestled between Cusco and Urubamba, was used by Túpac Inca Yupanqui for agriculture due to the area’s fertile soil. Its impressive architecture includes a church built by the Spanish in 1607, decorated by both Catholic and traditional imagery.MARAS
Maras is located in the Urubamba province. Founded by Pedro Ortiz de Orue in colonial times, Maras acted as a defense against invaders. Muleteers also used the town to transport goods like coca leaves. Maras is home to stunning religious architecture and art by Quechua painter Antonio Sinchi Roca Inka.MORAY
A few miles southwest of Maras is Moray, where Inkas constructed a complex irrigation system. The system allowed for several microclimates, which were key to the domestication of wild vegetables that Inkas adapted for human consumption. Such adaptation led to thousands of potato and corn varieties.SALINERAS (SALT MINES)
North of Maras are the salt mines. This site consists of 3000 ponds built into the slope of Qaqawiñay mountain. These ponds are filled by a natural spring every three days. As the water evaporates, the salt solidifies. The salt is then beaten into granules, treated with iodine, packaged, and sold to local markets.ITINERARY
As part of the Sacred Valley half day tour, clients will be picked up from Cusco and transported to Chinchero at 8:00 a.m. Here, you can mingle with local weavers and barter for fruits, vegetables, and textiles at the market. Next, we will head to Maras to appreciate the colonial-era architecture of the town, as well as art by Quechua painter Antonio Sinchi Roca Inka. After Maras, we will go southwest to Moray, a site home to the complex irrigation system developed by the Inkas. Moray’s unique construction allowed for the domestication of thousands of potato and corn varieties still used today. The final stop will be the salt mines, where you can wander a maze of 3000 small ponds built into the slope of Qaqawiñay mountain. On the walk down, enjoy the breathtaking snowy peaks of Weqey Willka and Chikon looming in the distance. Finally, we will return you to your local hotel.INCLUSIONS:
