Pottery has an important place in Peruvian history. Serving utilitarian as well as ceremonial purposes since pre-Inca times, pottery has a long-lived tradition with the locals. Dive right in with our Cusco Pottery Class and learn about the ancient techniques from a Cusquenian pottery legend. Julio Gutierrez, an award-winning artisan, will invite you to his workshop in located in Santiago. In a 2-hour class you will go through the process of making pottery from softening the clay to the finished oven-burnt product. You will also try your hand at decorating your very own piece of ceramic and then take it home as a souvenir for years to keep. Perfect for culture vultures and creatives, our Cusco Pottery Class does not just scratch the surface of ceramic making but will let you dive right in for an unforgettable experience.

We will pick you up at your Cusco accommodation at a time of your choice in the morning. After making our way to the pottery workshop in Santiago, the team will show you around their working space surrounded by beautiful gardens and filled with rustic tools and machinery. Your Cusco Pottery Class will begin with learning all about clay including how to select, cut, mould and prepare it for the pottery wheel.

Afterwards, you will have a go at the pottery wheel itself. Surprisingly, it will be a lot harder than it looks to create symmetrical piece! The process usually continues with firing the clay to get it to harden. However, as this does take some time, we will have some already fired pottery available for you to continue with. Select a bull or horse figurine and paint it as you wish. At this point it is time to part with our hand-painted pieces which will remain at the workshop to dry. You will be able to pick it up 2 days later if you wish. On a side note, throughout the class we will have refreshments and little snacks available.

Day 1- Half day Activity in Cusco -Pottery lesson

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco at a time of your choice in the morning. We will then make our way to the pottery workshop in the scenic neighbourhood of Santiago. There the team will welcome you to their working place – surrounded by beautiful gardens and filled to the brim with rustic tools and machinery. Your Cusco Pottery Class will begin with learning all about clay. You will hear about how to select, cut, mould and prepare it for the pottery wheel. Afterwards, you will have a go at the latter – of course, again with professional guidance. It is a lot harder than it looks and requires a pair of steady hands to create a symmetrical piece. The process continues with firing the clay to get it to harden in a very hot environment. However, this does take some time, so we will have some already fired pottery available for you to continue with. You will select a bull or horse figurine and paint it as you wish. Then you will have to part with your hand-painted ceramic for two days until it is ready for you to pick up from the workshop to take home. Full of new impressions and having learnt a lot about pottery making, we will take you back to your accommodation. On a side note, throughout the class you will not go hungry or thirsty as we will have refreshments such as tea, water and little snacks available.
