The 2 day Colca Canyon trekking tour is classified as moderately challenging. The first day involves a steep 1,300-meter (4,265-foot) descent into the canyon and around 6 hours of hiking in total. The second day begins with a 1,050-meter (3,445-foot) ascent over approximately 3 hours, which can be demanding. It’s recommended for travelers with a good level of fitness and a love for adventure.
The tour includes:
Here’s a packing list to ensure you’re prepared:
The trek begins at Pampa San Miguel (3,280 meters above sea level) and descends to Sangalle Oasis (1,900 meters above sea level). On the second day, you’ll climb back up to Cabanaconde (3,280 meters). Along the way, you’ll also visit Patapampa (4,800 meters), one of the highest viewpoints in the region. While the altitude can be noticeable, proper hydration and a moderate pace can help minimize discomfort.
Not necessarily! While the trek is physically demanding, it’s suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a sense of adventure. Your guide will ensure the group moves at a comfortable pace, and plenty of breaks are built into the itinerary. Trekking poles can also help make the ascent and descent easier.
Cellphone signal is limited or nonexistent throughout the trek, and there is no Wi-Fi in the canyon. This is the perfect opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Colca Canyon.
Meals on the trek are freshly prepared and include hearty, energy-packed dishes made with local ingredients. For example:
You’ll spend the night at Sangalle Oasis, staying in a simple basic bungalow. The accommodations are basic yet cozy, and the location—surrounded by palm trees and canyon walls—offers a truly unique experience. Bedding is provided.
Yes, you can refill your water bottle at specific stops during the trek. However, it’s important to bring at least 2 liters of water with you at the start of the hike, especially for the descent and ascent when hydration is crucial.
The best time to trek the Colca Canyon is during the dry season, from April to November, when the weather is sunny and stable. The rainy season, from December to March, can make trails muddy and more challenging, but it’s still possible to do the trek with proper preparation.
Your guide will assess the group’s needs and adjust the pace accordingly to ensure everyone’s comfort. If a traveler is unable to complete the trek, the guide will arrange alternative transportation or accommodations in nearby villages if necessary. However, completing the trek requires a basic level of fitness, so it’s important to prepare yourself physically beforehand.

First and foremost, our guide José was absolutely outstanding. He is incredibly knowledgeable, warm, and empathetic. We especially appreciated how he adapted the route to our needs and fitness level and provided thoughtful insights not just into culture and botany, but also current events and politics. He struck a perfect balance between engaging conversation and giving us time to take in the silence of the trail. He managed every encounter with locals and service providers on our behalf smoothly and professionally. His communication was clear and well-structured throughout the trek — we felt in excellent hands. Regarding transport, the pickup was punctual, and the vehicle was comfortable. Being picked up last was a plus. However, the bus guide on the way to Colca was extremely pushy and created a rushed, almost “cattle-herding” atmosphere, which really detracted from the start of the experience. On the return journey, things were much better — the bus guide had great timing and communication, and the city center drop-off at 5 p.m. made perfect sense due to traffic. The food offered during the tour was a mixed experience. Breakfasts were excellent, with thoughtful extras that reflected the premium nature of the package. Lunch was also enjoyable, and we appreciated the rest opportunity in the mountain lodge’s cabañas. However, dinner in the oasis lodge was substandard — not in taste, but in quantity. After a long, strenuous trek, the portions were not nearly sufficient (the same size for adults and children), and despite asking for a second plate of pasta, we were told there was none left. Ten minutes later, staff were served from a new pot. That was very disappointing and felt unfair. On the positive side, we liked the self-paid buffet stop on the way back. The accommodation in the oasis lodge was simple but clean and met our expectations. We were glad to receive towels, soap, and toilet paper. The water was lukewarm, but that was fine for the setting. Communication and organization were solid overall. We especially appreciated the fast and clear WhatsApp replies from the agency, and the website description matched the actual experience well.
