You leave San Pedro de Atacama at 8:00 AM, not because it’s trendy, but because timing matters when you’re crossing into another world.
By now, you’ve probably hiked Valle de la Luna, watched the Geysers del Tatio erupt at dawn, maybe floated in the salty lagoons. San Pedro gave you a taste. Now it’s time for the main course.

We head to Hito Cajón, the border point where Chile becomes Bolivia. Here, the landscape starts to feel like another planet. After a bit of paperwork, we cross.

Lunch stop near the Polques Hot Springs — not to bathe, just to breathe in the altitude and prep for the long road.

This day’s about the drive — 7 to 8 hours across surreal terrain. We stop to stretch and take in:
