Most chocolate workshops begin with chocolate. Ours begins with a fresh cacao pod and a story from deep within the Peruvian Amazon.
Welcome to Beyond Chocolate, a private Chocolate Making Experience in Cusco, where remarkable Amazonian cacao, fascinating stories, and the pleasure of making something with your own hands come together in the Sacred Valley.
Meet Julio, a cacao expert from La Convención who works closely with Matsigenka (Machiguenga) communities in the remote Peruvian rainforest. He brings exceptional cacao from their lands, along with a deep appreciation for the people, traditions, and knowledge behind it.
You’ll open a fresh cacao pod, roast and grind the beans, work with aromatic cacao paste, and make your own chocolate. This isn’t a demonstration. You’ll get your hands involved in every step.
And while the chocolate takes shape, your host, Katherine, shares fascinating stories in English or French about cacao’s history, its place in South American cultures, and its lesser-known spiritual significance.
As the afternoon draws to a close, we’ll gather in a circle around a crackling fire, with a cup of warm, pure cacao in our hands and the mountains of the Sacred Valley surrounding us.
No formal rituals, no rehearsed speeches. Just good chocolate, surprising stories, and conversations that might wander from travel and culture to philosophy, spirituality, or life itself.
Something about sharing a fire and a cup of cacao makes even the simplest conversation feel special.
Just the two of you? Wonderful. Bringing your family? Even better. Traveling with a few close friends? The afternoon is yours.
No strangers joining your table. No large groups. No rushing through activities because someone else is waiting.
Julio and Katherine dedicate their time to you, adapting the pace to your curiosity, welcoming your questions, and making space for the unexpected moments that often become the best memories.
You’ll leave with chocolate you’ve made yourself. But what stays with you might be the stories, the laughter, the warmth of the fire, and the people you shared it with.
After all, you can buy chocolate anywhere in the world.
Forget the ordinary chocolate workshop. Step into a private world of Amazonian cacao, where you’ll roast, grind, taste, and create your own chocolate alongside Julio, while Catherine brings its fascinating stories to life.
Whether you’re a couple, a family, or a small group of friends, this experience is exclusively yours. No crowds, no strangers, no rushing. Just the pleasure of making something with your own hands.
And when the chocolate is ready, gather around a crackling bonfire, sip warm, pure cacao beneath the Andean sky, and let the conversation wander wherever curiosity takes you.
This isn’t just a chocolate-making class.
It’s a journey from the Amazon rainforest to your hands, from ancient traditions to new friendships.
🍫 Book your private cacao experience and take home more than chocolate — take home a story worth telling.

Behind every cacao bean, there is a forest, a community, and a story worth protecting.
When you join our Private Chocolate Making Experience in Cusco, you’re doing more than making chocolate. You’re learning about the people, ancestral knowledge, and cultural traditions behind one of the Amazon’s most remarkable ingredients.
Our cacao comes from the lands of Matsigenka (Machiguenga) communities in the remote Peruvian Amazon. Through Julio’s close relationship with these communities, we bring attention to their cacao, their connection to the rainforest, and the knowledge behind its cultivation.
Julio shares more than chocolate-making techniques. He introduces you to the origins of cacao, the skills involved in transforming it, and the cultural knowledge passed between generations.
By choosing this experience, you support a small-scale tourism activity built around the expertise of a Peruvian cacao specialist rather than a mass-produced chocolate workshop.
Hosted privately by Katherine in English or French, this experience makes room for questions, stories, and different perspectives. Around the bonfire, with a cup of pure cacao in your hands, the conversation becomes as meaningful as the chocolate itself.
Because good chocolate begins with good cacao. But a meaningful experience begins with the people behind it.

Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

¡Recomiendo reservar tu próxima aventura peruana a través de Katherine y PIE!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Recomiendo esta agencia 200%.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Most chocolate workshops focus on making a finished product. Our Private Chocolate Making Experience in Cusco takes you much further. You’ll open a fresh cacao pod, roast and grind the beans, and create your own chocolate with Julio, an expert from La Convención. Along the way, you’ll explore the cultural history, Indigenous heritage, and fascinating stories behind Peruvian cacao.
Our cacao comes from the lands of Matsigenka (Machiguenga) Indigenous communities in the remote Peruvian Amazon. Julio works closely with these communities and shares his knowledge of their cacao, its origins, and the importance of maintaining the cultural traditions associated with it.
Absolutely. This experience is exclusively yours. Whether you’re a couple, a family, or a small group of friends, you won’t be sharing the workshop with strangers. Julio and Catherine dedicate their time to your group, allowing you to learn, ask questions, and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
Not exactly. This is a hands-on chocolate-making and cultural experience rather than a formal spiritual ceremony.
However, we end the afternoon with something special: The Cacao Circle. We gather around a bonfire, enjoy a cup of warm cacao, and share stories and reflections beneath the Andean sky. It’s a relaxed moment of connection, without prescribed rituals or expectations.
Yes! You’ll participate in the process, from opening a cacao pod to roasting and grinding the beans, working with cacao paste, and making your own chocolate under Julio’s guidance. No previous chocolate-making experience is necessary.
The experience begins at 3:00 PM and usually finishes around 5:00 PM. Sometimes we continue until approximately 5:30 PM, depending on the group’s curiosity, questions, and conversations around the bonfire.
The experience takes place at a beautiful private property in the Sacred Valley, near Urubamba.
Transportation is not included in the tour price. However, you can add private round-trip transfers from Cusco or your hotel anywhere in the Sacred Valley when making your reservation.
Your host, Katherine, shares the experience and its cultural stories in Spanish , English or French, while Julio guides you through the chocolate-making process. This combination brings together local cacao expertise and engaging storytelling.
Yes! It’s particularly enjoyable for couples, families, and small groups who appreciate food, culture, and meaningful travel experiences. Because it’s completely private, the pace can be adapted to your group’s interests and curiosity. Please let us know the ages of any children when booking.
Perhaps it will be opening your first cacao pod, the aroma of freshly roasted beans, or the satisfaction of making chocolate yourself.
Or perhaps it will be that final moment around the bonfire, sipping warm cacao, surrounded by the Sacred Valley mountains, sharing stories with people you’ve only just met.
You can buy chocolate almost anywhere. But experiencing the people, traditions, and stories behind it is something entirely different.
Pie Experiences is a trusted South America tour operator offering local activities and authentic tailor-made holidays in Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, and Ecuador.

We were four friends and had an amazing time! Katherine was such a lovely host, and Julio made chocolate-making really fun and easy. We laughed a lot, learned about Peruvian cacao, and ended the afternoon around the bonfire with delicious hot chocolate. Definitely one of our favorite experiences in the Sacred Valley!
