Far beyond the classic postcard stop, this Private Rainbow Mountain Peru tour takes you into one of Cusco’s most surreal high-altitude landscapes: the famous Rainbow Mountain and the dramatic Red Valley.
With a private guide, flexible pacing, hotel pick-up, and time to walk without rushing, this experience is designed for travellers who want more than a crowded viewpoint. You’ll hike through remote Andean scenery, meet the colours of Vinicunca, and continue into the red, desert-like valleys that make this route feel almost otherworldly.
Rainbow Mountain, Without the Rush-Enjoy the famous Rainbow Mountain viewpoint with your own private guide. Walk at a comfortable pace, take time for photos, and avoid the rushed rhythm of a large group tour.
The Red Valley Extension-Go beyond the classic Rainbow Mountain visit and continue into the Red Valley, a striking landscape of deep red hills, open ridges, and wild Andean scenery. This is one of the strongest reasons to choose this private tour.
Private Guide & Flexible Pace-Your guide will adapt the rhythm of the hike to your group, helping you manage the altitude, take breaks when needed, and enjoy the experience with more calm and confidence.
High-Andean Scenery-Throughout the day, you’ll see snowcapped mountains, remote villages, llamas, alpacas, and vast landscapes that reveal the raw beauty of the Peruvian Andes.
A More Personal Experience-This private Rainbow Mountain tour is perfect for couples, families, photographers, and travellers who prefer comfort, privacy, and a more meaningful connection with the landscape.
Your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:30 AM.
One of the main advantages of this Private Rainbow Mountain Peru tour is that you do not need to leave your hotel in the middle of the night. Instead, you can enjoy a good breakfast at your hotel before the journey begins, making the day feel more comfortable from the start.
Cusco is located at approximately 3,399 metres / 11,152 feet above sea level, and from here we begin a gradual ascent into the southern Andes.
The drive from Cusco to the Rainbow Mountain area takes approximately 3 hours.
Along the way, you will travel through rural villages, open valleys, high-Andean landscapes, and areas where llamas and alpacas graze beneath snowcapped peaks.
As the road climbs higher into the mountains, the altitude increases gradually. Your guide will explain what to expect, how to manage the altitude, and why it is important to take the day slowly.
This private experience gives you more flexibility than a standard group tour, allowing for a more comfortable rhythm from the beginning.
Upon arrival near the trailhead, your guide will give you a short briefing about the route, the altitude, and the walking pace.
By this point, you will already be above 4,600 metres / 15,090 feet, so the hike should be taken slowly and with awareness. The landscape here is open, dramatic, and unmistakably high-Andean.
For your safety and peace of mind, a portable oxygen tank and a first-aid kit will be available in the private vehicle during the tour.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace and how your body responds to the altitude.
The trail itself is not technical, but the elevation makes the experience challenging. You will be walking at very high altitude, surrounded by glaciers, wide valleys, grazing alpacas, and remote mountain scenery.
As you approach the final viewpoint, the famous colours of Vinicunca begin to appear: deep reds, yellows, greens, ochres, and soft mineral tones layered across the mountain.
Because this is a private tour, your guide can adapt the pace, include rest stops, and support you throughout the hike.
Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca, is located at approximately 5,200 metres / 17,060 feet above sea level.
Once you reach the viewpoint, you’ll have time to rest, take photos, and enjoy one of Peru’s most iconic natural landscapes.
Your guide will share insights about the geology, the surrounding mountains, local communities, and the importance of this high-Andean region.
This is the highest point of the experience, so we always recommend moving slowly, drinking water, and listening to your body.
After visiting Rainbow Mountain, your adventure continues toward the spectacular Red Valley.
This part of the tour is one of the main reasons to choose the private version. The Red Valley is quieter, wilder, and less crowded than the main Rainbow Mountain viewpoint. Its deep red hills, open ridgelines, and desert-like formations create a powerful contrast with the colourful slopes of Vinicunca.
The walk through the Red Valley usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the selected route, weather conditions, and your pace.
Since the area remains at high altitude, your guide will continue to monitor the rhythm of the walk and suggest breaks if needed.
After the hike, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved buffet lunch at one of the best restaurants in the Rainbow Mountain area.
This is another important difference between this private experience and many standard tours. Instead of a basic meal, you’ll enjoy a more comfortable lunch stop with a variety of peruvian options, ideal after a demanding high-altitude hike.
It is the perfect moment to relax, recover, and enjoy a warm meal before returning to Cusco.
After lunch, your private transport will take you back to Cusco.
The return drive takes approximately 3 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions.
Arrival at your hotel is usually between 6 PM and 7:00 PM, depending on weather, walking pace, lunch time, and traffic.
Your private guide and driver will make sure the day flows safely, comfortably, and without the rushed feeling of a standard group tour.

Challenging but Absolutely Worth It!
My friend and I did the private Rainbow Mountain tour, and wow, it was tough but so worth it! The altitude made the hike pretty challenging for us, but Juan de la Cruz, our guide, was incredibly patient. He kept encouraging us, letting us take breaks, and even shared tips to help us adjust to the altitude.
Juan’s calm and friendly vibe made all the difference. He shared interesting stories about the mountain and kept us motivated the whole way up. When we finally made it to the top, the view was out of this world! Juan even took amazing photos for us to remember the moment.
If you’re worried about the altitude or the hike, don’t be—this tour is incredible, and having Juan as our guide made it even better! Highly recommend!
