Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in One Day- ITINERARY OVERVIEW

At 5:30 a.m., your guide picks you up from your Aguas Calientes hotel, kicking off a day of pure thrill and wonder.

After a quick stroll to the train station, you’ll board for a scenic 40-minute ride to the legendary Kilometer 104—a point that’s off the beaten path and unknown to most tourists. This isn’t your standard Machu Picchu journey; this route is a doorway into the heart of the Inca Trail itself. As the train cuts through the Andes, you’ll glimpse the rugged beauty of the mountains, a teaser of the adventure that awaits.

From there, it’s all ancient paths, cascading waterfalls, and the roaring Urubamba River as you hike upwards to Wiñay Wayna, an Inca site clinging to the mountainside. Here, you’ll pause for a well-earned break and enjoy a box lunch, soaking in the surreal surroundings. Fueled up, you’ll continue to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, where Machu Picchu finally appears below. This isn’t just a view; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime reveal.

The tour officially ends upon reaching Machu Picchu. For a full guided tour inside the ruins, an additional ticket is needed for an afternoon entry. You’ll then take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where your Inca Trail ticket lets you explore Machu Picchu on your own, either later that day or the next on Circuit 3.

Access to Machu Picchu: Day 1 vs. Day 2 Options

Option 1: Visit Machu Picchu on Day 1

If you want to visit Machu Picchu immediately after completing the Inca Trail on Day 1, you will need to purchase an additional afternoon ticket for an extra cost of US$69.00. This allows you to enjoy a guided tour of the ruins as a courtesy. It’s ideal for those who want to explore Machu Picchu right after the hike without waiting until the next day.

Important: If you choose this option, the standard entry included with your Inca Trail (for Day 2) will be automatically forfeited. This ticket is non-refundable and non-transferable, meaning it cannot be used by another person or be exchanged for a different day.

Option 2: Visit Machu Picchu on Day 2

If you prefer to rest after your hike and visit Machu Picchu on Day 2, your Inca Trail ticket already includes access to Circuit 3, valid between 6:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This circuit allows you to explore the central archaeological area of Machu Picchu for up to 2 hours.

Please note: This visit will be self-guided, meaning you will explore Machu Picchu on your own, as the guide is not included on Day 2. Also, Circuit 3 does not include the classic viewpoints for the famous Machu Picchu photo.

Option 3: Guided Visit on Day 1 + Self-Guided on Day 2

For those who want the best of both worlds, you can choose to do a guided visit of Machu Picchu on Day 1 by purchasing the additional afternoon ticket for US$69.00, and then use your standard Day 2 entry for an independent visit the following morning.

This option allows you to experience Machu Picchu with a guide on Day 1 and return the next day for a self-guided exploration at your own pace. It’s a great way to get the full historical overview with a guide and then revisit the central ruins on your own.

Note: Your Day 2 entry will be limited to Circuit 5, giving you access to the main places in Machu Picchu citadel.
